Estimates of the total number of speakers of English
in India vary from around 4-20 percent of the population,
which given India's current population of around 1 billion
makes it one of the largest English-speaking countries in the
world. English is an 'associate official' language used
alongside 15 other major languages, including Hindi. It is
widely used in the domains of commerce, the legal system,
military, media, pan-Indian and regional administration. The
varieties of English spoken and written across the region are
referred to collectively as 'Indian English'. Population: c. 1
billion.
